Season Spew Marches On

February 21, 2011
by

As a third-year member of the subkrewe Seeds of Decline, I must say that the third time marching in Krewe du Vieux is definitely the charm.  I feel like I have it down now: the preparations, the staking out of good parking well beforehand, the frantic call to the husband for speedy delivery of costume elements I’ve forgotten, the ready-for-any-weather hardiness, the fact that I got into better shape in part to handle the trek through the Marigny and the Quarter. Things just worked this year.

I even managed to run around and take more pictures, in which I captured the special theme the Krewe of Spermes cooked up:

Yes, there is a Sperme Brass Band on there, as well as a pouffy-looking Mardi Gras Indian.

What I didn’t catch at the time was the fact that David Simon was marching with the sperm.

David Simon, creator of the HBO series “Treme,” not only inspired the Krewe of Spermes David Semen float, he marched in it. Waiting for the parade to roll, he told my friend the honor meant as much to him as the MacArthur Award.

He wasn’t the only Treme-terati in attendance, though:

The real Davis Rogan chats with the Spermes Davis.*

*UPDATE: The real Davis informs me in the comments that that wasn’t him. My apologies.

I thought this David Semen character looked more like Eric Overmyer…

…who was rocking it quite nicely with the Krewe of PAN.

And if you thought there wasn’t a role for a Spermes take on Janette, well, take a look:

Not a bad way to tide things over ’til the next season of Treme comes ’round.

Take a look at more Krewe du Vieux pictures here.  Next best thing to being there, but you don’t get the thrill of having a condom handed to you. Make your plans for next year. Happy Carnival to all.

Liprap – I am not in that picture. That is someone dressed as the real Davis. The pillow in the gut being a nice, as in vaguely insulting, touch.

Whoops! Never mind. Correction will be made, pronto.

Thanks for posting these great pictures! We had 2.5 metres of snow here last month, but seeing these gave me memories of being warm. I even broke my snow shovel this weekend. Bah.
