The Village Voice On Treme

April 1, 2010

There’s a piece by music writer Larry Blumenfeld wherein he not only discusses the show and its music but talks about the models for certain characters including the John Goodman character who is *loosely* based on our late friend, Ashley Morris. I emphasize the word loosely because Goodman’s character is married to Melissa Leo whose character is based on Mary Howell the do-gooding NOLA lawyer. And Ashley was married to the wonderful Hana aka Soviet Block; her rollergirl name.

I didn’t even know this law existed. It’s outrageous.

“Worse still, Howell explains, in 1974, the city passed a zoning ordinance that actually prohibits live entertainment in New Orleans, save for spots that are either grandfathered in or specially designated as exceptions. The very idea is mind-boggling—a city whose image is largely derived from its live entertainment essentially outlawing public performance. In practical terms, it’s “vague and overbroad enough,” says Howell, “to be ridiculous.”
